Education in China has stepped into a new stage of information along with the economic development. Increasingly, English is becoming a major international language tool, In addition, English is learnt mainly in class, so TEFL faces a great deal of difficulty. Thus it is necessary to create the environment of language learning to arouse the students' motivation. Multimedia breaks the traditional teaching models and changes the backward learning means. It is the aim to train students' abilities with creativity.A quasi experiment was conducted in an ordinary high middle school in Liaoyang City Liaoning Province. Two natural classes, 126 first-grade students, 63 each class, were involved, who entered the school in 2001. One was an experimental group , the other a control group. The experimental group were assigned to using the new means and the new learning models while the control group using the traditional ones. A pre-test , given before the quasi experiment showed no differences between the experimental group and the contiol group. Within a year's experiment, their performance was measuredthree times separately, which all indicated that the new means and the new learning models were more effective than the traditional ones for the development of the students' abilities.The experiment also shows that multimedia can help the teacher, but can never replace the teacher. A teacher has to make full use of the multimedia in his/her teaching.
