Bao an Minority, one member of 56 nationalities and one minority peculiar Gansu province, holds comparatively less people with the population of 14,000. Due to the strong discrimination against this minority and the oppressive policies carried out by the previous dominating reigns, coupled with the cruel natural living surroundings, its economy and culture have remained rather backward for a long time. Islam has a great impact on Bao an Minority in many fields, such as in its spiritual field, as well as in its political, economic, cultural fields and its daily lives, etc, particularly on the making of Bao an, development and its national coherence.Religion represents a cultural phenomenon which has been studied by majority of scholars from the perspective of religion and anthropology. From the perspective of sociology, this essay analyzes the data on the basis of Bao an Minority deeply affected by Islamic culture to expound the social functions and effects responsible for religious culture in modern society. Islam is a belief as well as a way of life, two of which belong to the category of study.Thus, this essay demonstrates that the Chinese Islam has numerous contents compatible with the socialist modernization construction. Chinese Islam will have more adaptability to the socialist modernization and better stimulation and promotion provided that we could guide and depend on the initiative of Muslim in an appropriate manner.
