Many high school English teachers find teaching writing to be a tedious and unrewarding chore. Although they are an important part of writing teaching, teachers' diligent attention, careful design, comments rarely seem to bring about improvements in subsequent work and better performance in students' writings. How can English teachers aid their students in promoting writing ability? Considering the limited time of teaching writing and a large number of students facing the teacher, this thesis Application of Inquiry Learning in High School English Writing Teaching-An Experimental Research puts forward an alternative way of teaching writing, that is, writing through inquiry learning. Inquiry learning in English studies is a learning activity. Essentially, in an authentic learning environment, with the help of teachers, the students actively put forward questions, analyze questions and solve questions in English, and during the study processes, they acquire English knowledge, skills and develop their abilities and characteristics. Inquiry learning is more focused on using and learning content as a means to develop information-processing and problem-solving skills. Inquiry learning in writing pays more attention to writing process. It follows such teaching principles as Task-based teaching, Student-based teaching, Teaching for communication and so on. It is more student-centered, emphasizing that the learners are the subjects of study, and individual cognitive development is the emphasis. Inquiry learning aims to enhance students' understanding of subjectivity, to develop students' use of subjectivity, to mould students' personality and to develop students' creativity. In inquiry learning, the teacher acts as a facilitator, organizer, adviser, or instructor of learning.This study sought to investigate the effect of inquiry learning on EFL (English as a Foreign Language) writing. The author randomly chose two senior classes (Class66 and Class 67) from No.29 Middle School of Changsha City, where the author is working. The whole population was 74.
