Planning is a series of thinking progresses that include selecting ideas, making ideas, organizing materials and using words. Planning is also a whole design before writing. It is the beginning of writing, and also the core step for an English-learner. It would be difficult to write a well-structured paper if s) he did not have a good knowledge of planning even with a good command of vocabulary and grammar. However, the cultivation of planning competence has not been taken seriously in middle schools in China. Writing teaching is mostly in the level of sentences instead of discourse level How to change the situation in writing teaching is just one of the main problems we English teachers have to deal with in middle schools. In this paper, the writer of the paper analyzes the effect of planning on the English writing teaching in middle schools and gives a mode of writing training based on planning theory to improve students writing.Firstly, the paper analyzes the situation of English writing teaching in middle schools in China. Writing is neither much valued nor taught in an appropriate method in middle school. As a result, there exist many problems in the writing habits and the consciousness of writing and so on in the students' confidence of writing. With consideration of these problems and of the demand of English writing in the New English Course Syllabus as well as current research results on this topic, we suggest that the planning method be utilized to guide English writing teaching in middle schools.Secondly, the theory about planning theory relevant to English writing is briefly introduced, such as the concept of planning as well as the research history around the world. Although more and more attention on planning has been paid so far, the approaches are wide divergent due to different purposes to analyze the planning .we base on the writing mode of Flower & Hayes (1980) to guide the planning teaching and experiment.Then this paper goes on to analyze the relationship between planning and English writing teaching. We suggest that the theory of planning be a prerequisite to more advanced English writing teaching and practice. The planning contributes a lot to training in English writing skills, especially in organization of the entire essay. Cohesion betweensentences as well as diction, and so on. Therefore, we offer a mode of planning. Three methods are introduced for students to make sure what to write and how to tackle the main ideas;three principles are also mentioned to organize the materials and use languages. With a combination of the theory of planning and the practice of English writing in middle school in addition to the character of writing in middle school, themode of writing planning of two common genres --------narration and explosions aretaken into consideration. On the base that the specific analysis of character of these two styles, the paper gives a detailed analysis of the sequences and methods of these two styles.To further elucidate the applicability of planning theory to English writing teaching in middle schools, we performed a teaching experiment of four months with a class in Xiangfan No.33 middle school. The mode of English writing teaching we adopted "reading-discussion-writing". The "reading" process mentioned above denotes reading with discourse analysis. First we help students get to know how the entire article is organized and extended, and then to analyze the grammatical device, lexical cohesion and logical connector in the discourse. Having all the process done, students are encouraged to discuss what to write, how to organize and give an outline. Our experimental average results reported in this paper show that application of planning theory to English writing teaching to the two paralleling tests have significantly improved the writing level of the students. These data has been analyzed statistically by the scientific sofewareSPSSlO.O.Finally, the writer show the limitation in research knowing that the limitation of theory and practice. More research will be done in the following teaching practice.
