We define burnout as"a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, treating their customers with a negative and too estranged attitude, and appraising his work passively caused by long-term involvement in situations that are emotionally demanding at work". It has three dimentionalities: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and component of reduced efficacy. Emotional exhaustion represents the dimension of individual pressure. It refers to the feelings of being overextended and depleted of one's emotional and physical resources. Depersonalization represents the dimension of interpersonal relationships. It refers to a negative, callous, or excessively estranged attitude to the customers of the work. The component of reduced efficacy represents the dimension of self-evaluation. It refers to the feelings of incompetence and a lack of achievement and productivity at work.There is not much study on burnout of university faculty in China. The author tries to probe into the reasons of the burnout of university faculty, in order to delve further into the psychological health of university faculty practically.The author adopts the methodology of documents, measuring and testing to discuss. Burnout was measured with the Mashlach Burnout Inventory-Teacher Scale, The job satisfaction Scale, Social Support inventory. The Self-Esteem Scale. A total of 550 surveys were delivered, with 490 of them returned from the recipients. The response rate is 89.09%. The survey returned were analyzed by the SPSS11.5 statistical software, after the package for mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA,T—Test Cronbachα, reliability analysis, pearson of correlation and regression analysis, the following conclusions are made:1. Burnout among University faculty is not so serious comparede with other occupations such as doctors, nurses, police, primary, secondary school teachers and kindergartners.2. Some demographic variables have significant influence on job burnout such as gender, age, degree,length of service, the subject he/she taught and the reason he/she became a teacher, while other demographic variables have no significant effect on job burnout including marriage status.3. Self-esteem has positive forecasting function to job burnout.4. Correlation analysis showed that significant correlation existed among satisfaction at work, social support and job burnout. Satisfaction is negative to job burnout, while social support is positive to job burnout.5. Self-esteem had significant effect on satisfaction at work and social support, while the three affect job burnout altogether with self-esteem as the antecedents.
