At present, the nationwide elementary curriculum reform is being carried, and whether it will be successful greatly depends on educational assessment. But for long periods, summative assessment has been the main assessment method in teaching assessment system in our country, and a student's testing scores have been regarded as the final assessment criteria to discriminate and select students. English teaching is no exception. So some students study English only to pass examinations or proceed to higher schools. They focus on the memorizing language points but neglect the importance of improving the ability to use the language. Apparently, summative assessment over emphasizes the importance of scores , and ignores the evaluation on students' creativity and subjectivity in the learning process, which will undermine students' motivation to learning and result in their total loss of interest in English learning. Therefore, it's badly necessary to establish a new assessment system to promote constant development of students.Weaknesses and problems of the traditional assessment system lead to the advocation of formative assessment. It pays much attention to students' attitude. Its purpose is to find out potential talents of each student, improve students' learning methods and provide feedback for teachers.
