A.S.Packard in the Bowdoin college of American associated the general education with the university education at the first time in 1829. Since then general education has developed for about two centuries and has attracted more and more attention. The magnificent project of quality education has been initiated in china since 1990s. So it has arouse people's attention to the implementation of general education as an essential part in quality education.General education integrates educational ideal with curriculum practice. As an educational ideal, it goes through the whole passage of education; as a curriculum practice,it closely combines with specialized education and promotes the"new man"who developed in anall-round way and correct judgment and acute insight. With the rapid development in science & technology and social economy, there is higher requirement for the people.As the place of promoting the talented people, universities also should adjust to the development of this age and promote the talented person with more suitable structure of knowledge and ability. To adjust the education to its aim and face 21st century's challenge, we should center on individual's whole development and highly prompt general education.So how to implement general education in university is the focus in my research. I try analysing the recent development of general education and its problem, on the basis of analyzing the concept of general education and the characteristics of its development. And I try to discover the general education that is suitable for our nation by concrete strategies . I think it helps to enrich and perfect its theory and practice in Chinese universities. So lifelong education and study-type society will be accomplished in China early. This thesis contains five parts.The first part is an general introduction, which explains the purpose and significance of choosing this topic. I make a general description of some scholars'finding in the field of general eduationand and introduce the basic researching- methods.In the second part, I define the concept of general education and analyse the historical track of its development in China then summarize its characteristics.In the third part, I make a thorough inquiry to the impetus of implementing general education in the Chinese universities. It is the need of the intellectual and economical age to implement the theory of general education. It conforms to the trend of higher education massification and lays the foundation of vicissitudes of working post and learning society because it promotes the whole and progressive development of human.In the forth part, I make an analysis of the present situation of general education in Chinese universities and try looking for its problems and the reasons. Now there is a blur understanding between concept of general education and its purpose in implementing it in Chinese universities. The confusing understanding lead to the confusion and low efficiency in the implementing of general education. Because of irrational setting of the courses of general education and its content the positive and active attitude couldn't be aroused. The obscure relationship between specialized education and general education brings out the failure of implementing general education and impedes the specialized education. It overlooks the free space of humanistic development and vanishes students'individuality. It is not suitable to develop the talented person with creativity because of lacking of the conscience of creativity.In the firth part, I put forward the corresponding strategies to recent problems. We had better chance our educational ideology and reconsider the idea of lifelong study and the concept of general education . We also should reform the aim of curriculum and realize the purpose of individual whole development by combining the broad specialized education with general education, scientific and humanistic education and by properly combining dominant courses with hidden curriculum . We should adopt a variety of teaching methods to improve the teaching quality. In addition to those improving teacher's individual quality and developing students'learning ability also help to implement general education.
