New Standard of English Curriculum advocates encouraging students to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing language skills through experience, practice, discussion, cooperation, inquiry and other patterns. The author of this paper has applied cooperative learning in Junior High School English writing training program. The experiment shows that cooperative learning is useful to heighten students'confidence, enhance their interest, change their habits and attitude towards English writing. And it is also an effective way to raise the students'learner-centered consciousness, improve their writing skills and the quality of English learning.New Standard of English Curriculum indicates that teachers should create different kinds of cooperative learning activities in order to make students learn from each other and help each other, experience the honor of success and develop student cooperative spirit. In doing so, students will realize their advantages and disadvantages so as to be willing to cooperate with others and cultivate their harmonious and healthy character.The society calls on thorough educational reformation to enhance students'learning skills. Now China has put one of the emphases on changing learning skills, including autonomy participation and readiness to probe, communicate and cooperate. Researchers think that cooperative learning is the most effective one among cooperative, competitive and individual learning strategies. However, it is seldom used. Cooperation should be the mainstream of classroom teaching. Therefore, the author of this paper has made some attempts on this theory.This thesis first introduces why the writer chooses this topic as the subject of the research. Then the theory of cooperative learning is thoroughly analyzed in the background of English language teaching in the world, including its definitions, theoretic basis, elements,strategies, characteristics and effects of cooperative learning, in comparison with individual and competitive learning. Finally, the paper discusses the differences between cooperative learning and group learning.Based on the theoretic inspection of cooperative learning, the writer applies this theory to English writing teaching and analyzes how to use it effectively. For the consideration of its reliability, the writer makes a questionnaire and an experiment to compare the changes before and after the research. At last, the writer concludes the research and gives some more advice.
