Taekwondo is a kind of folk wushu skill originated from ancient Korean Peninsula. The word consists of three parts: TAE means kicking with foot, while KWON means hitting with fist and DO refers to a kind of skill as well as a spirit. Taekwondo relies mainly on legs with the assistance of hands. Integrating constant strikes and rapid kicking, it is a very practical skill. Taekwondo is an ideal sport both in terms of athletic competition and in terms of protecting oneself. Following the spirit of "starting with courtesy and ending with courtesy" and "courtesy and persistence" in exercising, Taekwondo can cultivate the spirit of being tenacious and hardship-bearing, temper one's willpower, foster one's virtue, and form the character of loving one's country and self-devoting.Taekwondo consists of athletic and popular Taekwondo. The introduction of Taekwondo into our country and the establishment of Chinese Taekwondo Association (CTA) have been guided by the principle of "being run by the state, dependent on the society, being healthy and standard in its development, and rapid development". Upon it establishment, CAT has formulated its development route of focusing on athletic Taekwondo and directing the development of Taekwondo among the masses with athletics. In the Sidney Olympics in 2000, Chen Zhong has won the championship for female Taekwondo over 67 kilograms. And in the Athens Olympics 2004, Luo Wei and Chen Zhong have won the championship for female Taekwondo at the categories of 67 kilograms and above respectively. These have demonstrated the strong power of China in athletic Taekwondo. At the same time, popular Taekwondo has also achieved rapid development in China. Statistics has shown that there are over one million Taekwondo participants in our country (excluding the professionals), and there are over five thousand Taekwondo clubs. However, popular Taekwondo has been at a chaos state and there exist many a problem in its development. In order to know the current development of Taekwondo in Lanzhou and find out the existing problems and strategies to tackle these problems, the present thesis has adopted such research methods as literature review, questionnaire, interviewing, etc. to analyze and study the factors influencing the development of popular Taekwondo in Lanzhou. Findings from the research indicate that the main factors constraining the development of popular Taekwondo in Lanzhou are as follows: First, most of the Taekwondo trainers are at a low proficiency level without much education and with limited training experience, and their theoretical knowledge is not sufficient. Besides, most of them have not received much training. Second, the facilities in the popular Twatwondo gymnasiums are at a poor state. Third, most gymnasiums in Lanzhou lack the necessary emergency measures to deal with accidents in exercising, and the club members' safety has been at stake. Fourth, the Twatwondo gymnasiums have been run chaotically and there lacks an effective qualification checking system. There exists blind area in the administration and management of Twatwondo gymnasiums. In addition, the inter-gyms communication is scarce, and there does not exist a supervising mechanism in gymnasiums fee-charging.The following suggestions are put forward based on the research findings mentioned above: (1) Strengthening the power of administration department and its supervision of the qualifications of the gymnasiums, standardizing the market management of popular Tawkwondo. (2) The Taekwondo Association of the Gansu province should play the role of bridging and directing the development of Taekwondo, organize more competitions and communications. (3) Strengthening the propaganda of Taekwondo in the media. (4) The training of the Taekwondo trainers should be strengthened. (5) The examining criteria should be established by the Taekwondo Association of the Gansu province.
