Gender inequality problem is not only the result of the long development of the society, but also the synthetic result of politics, culture, and so on. In order to make clear the cause of gender inequality and construct a harmonious gender relation, it's necessary to absolutely smash the polar opposition between male and female, and to deconstruct the polar notion existing in thought, politics and economic system. The notion of gender, which originated in the second tide of feminism in 1960s', is the core notion in western feminism and the central content of feminine scholarship. It provides a new perspective for researching gender inequality and serves as a firm theoretical foundation for theoretical construction of feminine development. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter systemically elaborates the notion of gender. Gender is the product of social life, and develops with it. In feminism, gender, being a cultural element, a social relation, a power system, a tool of recognizing social phenomena and analysis Category of methdology, is widely used and researched. Chapter two focuses on the evolution of the notion of gender in the theory of western feminism. Firstly, it analyses the background of the notion of gender and elaborates that it was open to the effect of existentialism feminism, Marxism feminism, and Freud Psychoanalysis feminism. Then it objectively analyses the opinions of scholars of different western schools in the order of its produce, development, and the doubt on it. The third chapter expounds the dispute between essence theory and constructivism in the notion of gender. At first, it analyses their own positions, and then points out that the essence of dispute lies in their understanding of disparity. The fourth chapter mainly analyses the historical significance of the notion of gender, the contemporary dilemma, and the possible solutions to it. Gender, a academic notion in philosophical trend of thought, must break its own theoretical limitation, fully focus on the process and relation in research, and replace the objective points of view with those of relation. In a word, we must analyze and judge the notion of gender on the base of Marxism feminism, absorb the essence of Marxism feminism and rectify its deviation, so as to guide the female liberation, and finally achieve a free and full-scale development of human being.
