Study Of The Related Factors Of Parents' Expectations Of Children's Personal Goals

Objective: (1) To investigate the correlation of parents' expectations of children's personal goals and parents' aspirations and personality traits, (2) To compare parents' expectations of children's extrinsic and intrinsic goals, (3) To analyze the relationship of parents' sex, age, job, income, education, family type and location and parents' expectations of children's personal goals.Methods: Aspiration Index (Chinese Version) and Chinese Personality Assessment Inventory-2 were investigated in 235 parents of adolescents studying in city, and 240 parents of adolescents studying in countryside, t-test, One-way ANOVA, correlate analyze, and linear regression in the software of SPSS were introduced to analyze parents general information, aspirations, personality traits, and parents' expectations of children's personal goals.Results: There are sex, age, job, education, family type and location differences in parents' expectations of children's life goals. Parents' expectations of children's intrinsic goals are more important than extrinsic goals. Parents' expectations of children's personal goals are significantly correlated with parents' aspirations. Parents' traits of Face, Ah-Q Spirit, and Traditionalism-Modernity are related to extrinsic goals significantly, and the correlation of parents' traits of Family Orientation, Ren Qing, and Harmony and intrinsic reached significant level.Conclusions: (1) Parents' expectations of children's personal goals are more important than parents' aspirations, but the relationship between them is correlated. (2) Parents' expectations of children's personal goals are correlated with parents' personality traits. Extrinsic goals are related to parents' personality traits of Face, Ah-Q Spirit, and Traditionalism-Modernity, and the correlation of parents' traits of Family Orientation, Ren Qing, and Harmony and intrinsic reached significant level. (3) Parents' expectations of children's intrinsic goals are much higher than extrinsic goals. (4) Parents' expectations of children's personal goals are correlated with parents' sex, education, family type and location.
