In the middle school the reading teaching is mainly launched out and carried forward by a series of discourses including teacher's initiation, student's response and teacher's follow-up. The teacher's follow-up discourse means a brief speech on student's response, delivered by a teacher after he had got some answer from his students. According to a teacher's attitude, his follow-up discourse can be divided into two categories: supporting one and non-supporting one.The former is composed of two types: simple one and complex one. By means of simple follow-up discourses such as repeating, appraising, helping, inferring, concluding, explaining and making a detailed inquiry etc., the teacher not only gives the speaking student support and encouragement but also concentrate other students' attention and arouse them into active thinking, These discourses show teacher's function in guiding students. The complex follow-up discourse actually means the teacher's composing and utilizing all kinds of simple forms according to the specific conditions. This type of follow-up discourse consists of emphasizing style, concluding style, interpreting style, and guiding style. Compared with simple follow-up discourse, the composition, utilization and expression of complex follow-up discourse is more complicated and plentiful, it can regulate the classroom teaching effectively.Non-supporting follow-up discourse is usually an negative answer from the teacher to what the student expressed. It depends on the tactics of a teacher's follow-up discourse that the non-supporting one can activate the thought and maintain the enthusiasm of students or not in classroom instruction. The teacher choose some indirect way of expression on the basis of students' response and classroom teaching, such as recessive negative, part affirmation, consultation, reduction to absurdity, comparing, which could make his follow-up discourse in the negative more acceptable, mild and roundabout, to lead his students to correct themselves.
