With the rapid development of the world economy and frequent contacts between different countries, cross-cultural communication is getting more and more important. Both the New Curriculum Requirements and the need of cross-cultural communication show that the real aim of English teaching is to improve students' cross-cultural communicative competence.In recent years, studying the cultural factors behind the language and probing into how to cultivate students' cross-cultural awareness in order to develop their cross-cultural communicative competence have become an important research subject in English teaching. Many scholars and teachers have undertaken researches related to culture teaching and have published many works and articles, yet few of their researches are connected with how to develop senior high school students' cross-cultural awareness under the New Curriculum Requirements. Therefore, this paper intends to do some research in this field.The paper aims to cultivate students' cross-cultural awareness in accordance with the New Curriculum Requirements. It reflects the present situation of culture teaching in senior high schools on the basis of the questionnaires, the cross-cultural tests. The author analyzes the necessity and the urgency of cultivating students' cross-cultural awareness, and explores a culture teaching module, aiming at providing some guidance for culture teaching in senior high schools. The experiment proves that the culture teaching module constructed by the author can be operated and has practical meaning.This thesis consists of six parts:The first part serves as the introduction of the whole thesis. It offers introductory remarks on the background, the aim, and the necessity of this study. It also points out the methods adopted in the study.The second part refers back to related achievements on culture teaching both home and abroad.The third part sets forth the understanding of cultivation of cross-cultural awareness in senior high school English teaching. The author first analyzes the necessity based on the New Curriculum Requirements and the need of cross-cultural communication, and then points out the urgency of cultivation of cross-cultural awareness with the questionnaire results, the statistic analysis, and culture-related texts as its foundation.Part Four offers a culture teaching module made up of aims, contents, principles and methods in relation to cultivation of cross-cultural awareness with the consideration of the New Curriculum requirements.Part Five introduces a teaching experiment conducted by the author in a senior high school, including its designs, goals, procedures, measures and results and so on.The last part serves as a summary and points out its value, limitations as well as suggestions for further research.
