The Study On The Development Of School Sports In The Modern Northeast China: 1906-1931

As a kind of modern culture, sports began to enter into northeast China at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. With the positive efforts of local authorities and the community, an upsurge of promoting and participating in sports activities rose in urban and rural areas in the three provinces of northeast China, reaching its climax before the September 18th Incident. And the Northeast became the advanced region in promoting sports activities all over the country.In order to summarize the professional sports history of modern northeast China and to promote the study of education and cultural history in modern northeast China, this article is trying to make an intensive study of its historical background and its process of rise and development. From the point of structure, this article can be divided into three parts:The first part introduces the historical background of the school sports'development in northeast China, mainly elaborating from two aspects: the advocacy and promotion effects of the New Deal in northeast China and of Young Men's Christian Association. The second part is the focus of this article, discussing the specific performance and features of the rise and development process of school sports in northeast China. The first phase elaborates from the sports activities in railway subsidiaries, the activities inside and outside of classroom of new-style schools and the emergence of professional sports talents. The second phase discusses about the rise of special sports, the carrying out large-scale sporting events and the domestic and international sports exchanges. The third part sums up the causes and the impacts of the outstanding achievements of the Northeast schools sports, its causes including local government's respects, the supports of gentlemen and businessmen and the promotion of alien schools and Young Men's Christian Association, its double impact including both positive and negative aspects, with positive ones being dominant.
