The thesis aims to find out the relationship between the choosing of tennis tournaments made by professional tennis players and the annual scores thus induced. And then we may fully recognize the importance of a reasonable participation arrangement to a player, which can contribute to the coaches in their yearly training arrangement. Adopting the methods of literature review, case analysis, statistics et cetera, the thesis provide an examination to the yearly participation arrangement of the top 3 tennis players on ATP ranking list by the end of 2009 and the most changeable player within the top 10. Through intense and systematic analysis and induction, I draw the conclusion as presented below:1 Considering the large quantities, different ranks and restrictions of the contest, the players may participate in games based on their selection.Among these contests are Grand Slams which are their primary concerns, and practice games merely to adjust their states as well as those perfunctorily just for obeying the ATP's rules and those exhibition matches for business reasons. The different natures of those contests decide the player's attention; will to fight and the scores they get.2 The match grade is one of the influential elements in deciding the yearly participation arrangement for professional tennis players. More tournaments and champion cups are not their pursuits. Instead, professional tennis players tend to consider how to get more scores by fewer contests. The higher the match grade, the greater the activity and attention. Preeminent players may also choose to play at their preferred places and participate in different tournaments to avoid those similar capable opponents.3 How many times a professional tennis player participates in tournaments in one year bears no proportion to his year-end ranking. The participation number may vary with grade and personal preference. It is appropriate and scientific for a professional player to control the number between 60.5 and 85.6. Either excessive participation or insufficient contest will lessen their performance.4 The reward is another consideration in choosing a contest, especially among low level contests. When several tournaments overlap, top professional players tend to select the one with higher reward. However, reward is not the merely reason for them to consider.5 It will be helpful for players to sustain good form if they can adjust the interval between matches to their physical conditions. Top professional players will arrange more than 2 weeks to adjust and rest around Grand Slams (especially after Grand slams) and before the ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Excessive participation in short-interval contest (less than one week) will exert great burdens to the players, consuming their energy and causing unprofitable early best state.6 The type of tennis courts causes great influence to the players. Professional tennis players are expert in different types of courts, where their skills and trump cards produce different effects. Every player has his preferred type and that have a direct effect on their choosing of contests. In preparation for the four Grand Slams, top players will select corresponding type of court in their warm-ups.7 Not to violate the restrictions, professional players may malinger some of the compulsive tournaments midway to preserve their strength, adjusting their condition to assure a good performance in a high-level contest. Top players quit some compulsive contests every year, while the restrictions of ATP World Tour 500 Series exert little effect in choosing of contests.
