Research On The Techniques And Tactics Of Some World-elite Male Table Tennis Athletes Who Are Pen-holders And Use Inverted Sponge

As one of the traditional plays of Chinese table tennis, the pen-hold grip with inverted sponge play is aggressive and attacking, which has made great contributions to the skills and technique development of table tennis. Using the methods of documentation, expert interview, statistics analysis, three-phase method, logic analysis and video observation, this article makes a profound analogy and exploration of some preeminent players whose play are pen-hold grip and use inverted sponge as racket covers. The conclusions are as follows:1 Showed by statistics from three-phase method, MaLin, attacker, has the problem of switching between attack and defense, lacking the ability of driving consistent heavy strokes; slacking at the third stroke in the phase of attack after service; making occasional mistakes in figuring out the returns that are stroked by his opponent; making turn-over frequently at the stroke of service reception, especially unsatisfactory in dealing with a ball that bounces near to the end line; weakening in the phase of stalemate when the change of placement and direction is needed, especially in the direction-changing of diagonal-to-diagonal and straight-to-straight. For the part of Ma Lin, his supreme advantages lies in the phase of attack after service and the phase of attack at service reception while his prominent weaknesses are devoid of scoring rate and application rate in the phase of stalemate.2 Wang Hao is a all-round player with no conspicuous weaknesses. He is famous for explosive powerful stokes of forehand & backhand, resorting to score by backhand. However, his weaknesses include:lower rate of attacking by forehand, the loss of traditional pen-hold push skills in the use of placement and flexible direction-controlling capacity while defending. In the case of impatient to win, Wang often appears to be over aggressive. Statistics collected from three-phase method in recent two years indicates that the most advantageous phase of Wang is attack by returning service; normal in attack after service, high scoring rate of stalemate but lower frequency of stalemate; total scores relatively decline, which causes unstability of winning games. 3 Liu Cheng-min, a penholder, driving loops and smashing by using only one surface of the racket, characterized by playing tough and aggressive with powerful forehand attacking, quick change of placement, intense spin, high service quality, heavy attacking ability at the third bat. Different from Wang hao, Liu is troubled by slight attacking capacity of backhand for which he has to frequently apply pivot attack to make compensate. Analyzing from three-phase method, Liu Cheng-min doing good in both attack after service and attack by returning, but plays poorly in stalemate demonstrates by lower scoring rate and using rate.4 Xu xin is another all-round player, but lack explosion both in forehand & backhand, lacking of coherence between the first and the third bat in the phase of attack after service, making good in pivot attack and drop, commanding well in backhand cross-play Pen technology with which integrated the traditional pen-hold push skills by Xu and makes the two techniques as a whole. This makes up for the weakness innate the inverted sponge pen-holders who have difficulties in swift switching from forehand to backhand.
