| The subject gateway is characterized as one of the web resource organizationmodels, which collects, selects, describes and organizes the Internet resources in thespecial fields with the subject specialists and information experts' participation,based on the high standards of quality control and selection criteria. The subjectgateway provides the end users a high quality of subject access through both searchand subject-browse facilities as valued-add services. There are various ways in the subject gateway to organize Internet resources.Organizing resources by the type is one of the most important ways. The dissertationmainly focuses on the classification of resource types and its application in theportal as follows: (1) The author summarizes the concepts, characteristics and patterns of thesubject gateway, furthermore clarifies the subject status, development trends andproblems. (2) Current researches on the resource type is generalized. From the FRBR'snew way of resource organization to the revision of traditional cataloging rules, andto the foundation of various type lists of metadata, the traditional resources andelectronic resources are analyzed and classified. The researches give examples to theclassification of subject gateway resources. (3) Based on the summarization of the organization methods of subject gateway,The author investigates about 30 Internet subject gateways, 25 of which can bebrowsed and searched by type of resource. According to the study, the authorcollects eighty kinds of resources, and then summarizes the characteristics of theresources in the subject gateway. (4) Based on the investigation and research, the author suggests a hierachicalsubject gateway resource type list which tries to unify the type classification insubject gateway. The list mapped to several subject gateways's resource types maybe as a reference to organize the resource by types in subject portal. Finally the testresult is analyzed. 2 diagrams, 25 tables and 3 appendices are included.
