This thesis will explore two questions. First, what are the characteristics of mentallexicon organization and extraction when Chinese students are learning Russian as asecond language? Second, of what significance are experiments such as the WordAssociation Test used to study the second language mental lexicon? In order to answerthe questions, a word association test was conducted on Chinese students majoring inRussian at Heilongjiang University. Thirty-five were selected as stimulus words. Thestudents’ response words were collected and classified into seven types, includingpolymerizationresponse, voice response, no response, encyclopedic knowledge response,derived response and inflections response. The thesis will compare the response wordscollected from the test with the ones given in the Russian Word Association Dictionary.After the classification and comparison, the thesis will attempt to describe the structuralcharacteristics of organization and extraction of the students’ mental lexicon. In addition,the thesis will explore the significance of experiments such as the Word AssociationTest.The thesis will then develop strategies for second language learning. In addition,the thesis will propose ideas relating to second language mental lexicon and bilinguallexical editing.
