As early as in1980s, Todor rove’s Structuralism narratology achievements attracted theattention of scholars at home and abroad, his narrative syntax was widely researched. Thegeneration of narration had a lot to do with linguistics, and Todor Rove narrative syntax wasespecially the case. But under what kind of background this "syntax" is produced? And whats itseffect of linguistics? is the theory suitable for the analysis of the Chinese ancient literary works?This article will analyse Todor Roves narrative syntax from two aspects of linguistics andnarrative and by adopting the theory of the narrative to annlyse the dream of red mansions,enables us a new angle of narrative syntax, and deepen the understanding of it. This is where theinnovation of this paper and the value lie. that is, describe relavant research method ofnarration from the perspective of linguistics explains the causes of this relationship, on whichbasis to study Chinese ancient literary works.the emergence of Todor rove’s narrative syntaxtheory is not accidental, this paper first expounds the theoretical background of Todor Rovenarrative syntax. The article will demonstrate from two aspects:the steering of language theoryand the angle of perspective transformation of literature research.The linguistic turn inwestern philosophy make the form of works more important in thefield of literary creation. The theory of saussure’s structuralist linguistics-themethodological basis of the language turn-whether its theoretical content, or research way, allhad a profound effec on Todor Rove, he proposed his iew under the way of research saussure’sstructuralist linguistics; Under the influence of linguistic turn, the perspective of literary studychanged from the external of literature to the literary itself, with the formalism literary theoryand thoughts of structuralism as representive, this kind of transformation has importantinfluence over later structuralism narratology.Todor rove, as one of the main representative ofstructuralist literary theory, his theory of narrative syntax comes into being under the context.The article then discusses his narrative syntax theory. He argues,narrative work iscomposed of two basic elements, namely the statement and sequence. And the characters’actionschange through the connection and transformation. the statements of basic structure of the workis similar with that of the presentation of declarative sentence in linguistics. In this paper, in thefirst part of the second chapter will focus on his narrative syntactic theory. Much of his narrativetheory is extracted from the analysis the short stories of "the decameron", the second part of thischapter will also use "the decameron" to illustrate his theory.Todor Rove narrative theory also applies to analysis of ancient Chinese literature. the thirdchapter presents its application in China, mainly with the aid of a dream of red mansions to illustrate his theory, and from two aspects: narrative sequence and the narrative mode of "adream of red mansions" were analyzed.Finally, the paper puts forward the theory’s value and shortcomings.As a kind of theoryanalysing the narrative form and the internal structure, while can effectively interpret thenarrative works,it still has its disadvantages, the paper mainly expand four aspects,namely fromthe limitations of the research object, the theory ignores the literary aesthetic attribute, relationbetween the literature and the external environment, and the lack of humanism spirit. All of thesemake it ignored the soul of literature, more and more far away from the essence of literature.
