This thesis is mainly focus on Alois Riegl’s theory of "perception" and researchon the relationship between "art progress" and "Kunstwollen". The "perception" is aform of the senses; while,"Kunstwollen" is the objective and substantial spirit. Thetheoretical foundation of Riegl’s art history research is based on the "perception"which is the form of the senses. However, the "Kunstwollen" is inherent inaccordance with "perception". Atfer Riegl proved the concept of "Kunstwollen"through "perception",he re-established "Kunstwollen" as the objective existence ofsubstantial spirit. In addition,Alois Riegl figured out the "art progress" from theevolution of art. Atfer the processing of "perception", the"Kunstwollen" lead to theprogress inevitably. That is to say the objective evolution of art and spiritual evolutionare developed at the same time, which is described as progress by Alois Riegl. Thepurpose of the thesis is to analyze features in those two areas of Riegl’s art theory, hoping to figure out the intention of the "perception" in Riegl’s theory.
