Intervention Study Of Group Counseling On Social Anxiety Of Left - Behind Children In Junior Middle School

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of group counseling on the social anxiety of junior left-behind children. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of left-behind children and influence of social anxiety,14left-behind children qualified and volunteered from one middle school were screened through questionnaires and interviews and divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group received eight times for a total of thirteen hours of experimental treatment, and the control group did not receive any treatment. In this study, the independent variable was group counseling, and the dependent variable was the members’score of’Social Anxiety Scale for Children’testing before and after the experiment. Finally, combined with the analyses of qualitative materials such as the observation records of group activities and the feedbacks and interview of members who participated in the Group activities, supplements was provided for assessing the experimental results.The main conclusions of this study are as follows:1. Self-designed group counseling has a positive impact for junior left-behind children’s social anxiety, fear of negative evaluation and social avoidance and distress; In terms of fear of negative evaluation, the experimental group showed less fear of negative evaluation than the control group.2. The analyses of qualitative materials explain that group counseling has a positive impact on middle school left-behind children’s interpersonal skill. Besides, the factors that prompt group counseling effectively are the homogeneity of group members, harmonious atmosphere and cohesion of group, effective group counseling program, the leader’s observation of the problem and processing technology.
