Xu Sangeng 's Life And His Seal Cutting Art

Xu Sangeng played an important role in the history of calligraphy and sealcutting history of late Qing Dynasty, the seal cutting in calligraphy,and higherthan that of calligraphy,so the seal cutting art is the focus of this paper. XuSangeng put his "very pretty and charming" seal character into the seal, inDeng Shiru, Wu Rangzhi set up a new banner, become representative of "sealcutting depend on calligraphy", later known as the "excellent drawing skills andelegant style, Shanshan everything". Long term study of Xu Sangeng aremostly based on image data (including the seal cutting and calligraphy works),the lack of historical research, which provides an opportunity for the writing ofthis article. In this paper, through the analysis of its seal inscriptions and otherwritten materials, the life and friends, name and confusion on the long maderesearch. Xu Sangeng read widely in seal cutting, this paper also summarizesone by one. If the seal cutting art history focuses on Xu Sangeng, then "sealcutting depend on calligraphy" is the focus on the seal, so this paper willconcentrat his seal in the "seal cutting depend on calligraphy". Although XuSangeng in the domestic impact of small, but far-reaching impact on Japan,this is an interesting phenomenon. Through in-depth analysis of the sealcutting art, and later on his evaluation, finally, this article will reposition thestatus of Xu Sangeng in the history of the seal cutting.
