Since the1980s, Director of Australian documentary Bob Connolly created asuccession of a group of successful documentaries, such as "Black Harvest","Facingthe Music", and "Rats in the Ranks" as the representative. These films get affirmationof all International Documentary Association Awards which including the OscarNominations and the Evans Awards, so that he became one of the most prestigious inthe international contemporary documentary. This paper detailed sorted out andsummarized the development context of the Australian documentary and found thegeneral characteristics of the national identity positioning and cultural identity byimage. Meanwhile, through the introduction of Bob Connelly ’s personal creativeexperience, interpret and compare his Ethnographic works " Highlands Trilogy"("First Contact"," Joe Leahy’s Neighbors" and "Black Harvest"),"Mrs Carey’sConcert" and seven masterpieces and focused on unusual topics, philosophical themes,and dramatic narrative strategy of films which described and analyzed in depth. Basedon this, analyzed how Bob Connelly achieves to capture political and culturalreflection and the value of individual life by "Participant Observation", thus providetheoretical reference for domestic documentary creators.
