| The counselors’ verbal response mode and intentions are two key processvariables for the counseling outcome. Clear and explicit consulting intentions ofcounselors make the counseling process not in chaos and then make the counselorsselect the appropriate verbal response mode to guide visitors for self-exploration.Although much foreign research has focused on consultant variables and has formedmultiple sets of coding systems, domestic studies on psychological counseling juststarted to focus on efficacy studies and few studies adopted empirical methods toexplore the process variables of counselors. Using the Consensus qualitative research(CQR) to analyze the short-term personal psychological counseling of test anxiety, the current study aimed to establish coding systems for counselors’ verbal responsemode and intentions in order to better describe and understand psychologicalcounseling of test anxiety.Adopting direct analysis of consultant cases and analysis of structured interviewsthese two operant methods, this study separately explored the issues involved inconsulting verbal response mode and consultants intention during selected10cases (5cases conducted by a mature counselor and5cases by four immature consultantassistants, totally36consultant meetings). The results showed that:(1) Counselors’ verbal response mode included10domains: question, encouragement and repeat, paraphrase, information and interpretation, connection, guidance and advisement, cognitive revise, emotional revise, cognitive operations, and others.(2)in the initial interview, the proportion of these ten domains that the maturecounselors respectively used were: question (40.5%), encourage and repeat (24%),guidance and advisement (11.1%), interpretation (5.6%),the immature counselorsrespectively used were: question (35.2%), encourage and repeat (26.9%),interpretation (13.9%), guidance and advisement(8.6%);These descriptive staticsimplied different trends in these domains that mature and immature counselors used. Specially, mature counselor tended to use more use question technology, guidanceand advice technology than immature consultants, who preferred to encourage repeatand interpretation technology; Compared to mature counselor, immature consultanttended to use more cognitive modification technique, and less mood modificationtechnique; Mature consultant used the advanced technology “connection†to make thecounseling deeper, while immature consultants didn’t do; Mature consultant andimmature consultants tended to use the same proportion of cognitive operations, andinformation and interpretation.(3) Counselor intentions can be divided into the following nine domains:assessment, relationship, set limits, guide catharsis, explore, restructure, educate, fixed and migration, miscellaneous.(4) Comparative analysis showed that, compare to immature counselor maturecounselor have more intentions in the counseling process; except to guide catharsis, mature counselor use more intentions than immature counselor; the proportion ofthese ten domains that the mature counselors respectively used were: explore94(23.6%), set limits68(17.0%), restructure63(15.8%), assessment of59(14.8%),educate35(8.8%), immature counselors respectively used were: explore61(8.9%),set limits54(16.8%), educate53(16.5%), restructure51(15.8%), guide catharsis36(11.2%); These descriptive statics implied different trends in these domains thatmature and immature counselors used: both of them use more explore and set limits;from the rest of consultation with the intent of the proportion of view, maturecounselor consulting intent reconstruction, assessment than important than immatureconsultant, immature counselor consulting intent education and guidance, guide thecatharsis higher proportion. |
