An Analysis Of The Supplementary Strategies In The Chinese - English Communication Of The Press Conference

The obstacles in language between Chinese and English and the different cultural and political background all contribute to the difficulties in the process of interpretation for NPC&CPPCC press conference. As a result, to achieve the best target-languages, the interpreter will adopt some strategies. Addition strategy is a frequently used translation means in the process of interpretation with the aim of making the translation more fluent, accurate and complete. And the principle of addition strategy is to add words but not add new meanings that the source language does not contain. This thesis starts with an introduction to addition strategy and its function in consecutive interpreting. The major reasons of the utilization of addition strategy in consecutive interpreting are mainly based on the different syntax structure between English and Chinese, different modifiers, the characteristics of consecutive interpreting, and different cultural and political background. By picking out typical sentences from the transcripts of NPC&CPPCC Press conference, this thesis carries out a study on the addition strategy to the Chinese-to-English consecutive interpreting from the perspective of linguistic additions and extra-linguistic additions. Each addition is subdivided in several classes to make a more detailed analysis. It is hoped that the outcome of the study will provide both theoretical and practical reference for interpreters in their work.
