The Positive Role Of Photography In Chinese Realistic Oil Painting

Due to the interaction of various reasons, in China, Realism has always been the mainstream style among different types of oil painting. This article is developed based on such background, and it is composed of three parts. Part I analyzes the active role that photography plays in realistic oil painting through defining the border of realistic oil painting, and also analyzes the relationship between realistic painting and photography. Part II depicts the combination of realistic painting and photography, mainly from three aspects, including seeing art taste and culture as a standing point, combing “realism” and “return-to-the-reality concept”, and using different techniques as references.Part III mainly discusses the active impact of photography on Chinese realistic oil painting. From three different angles, they are the active impact on creation concept, on choosing theme, and on modelling details, respectively. With the assistance of photography, Chinese realistic oil painting will continuously brace the past and the future in order to make progress. In that sense, photography is both a competitor and a companion of realistic painting.
