The Unit ed States and Korea signed a bilatera l treaty i n 1882 through the mediation of China, and thus Korea was opened. There are two stages for the event: the previous stage is from the General Sherman Incident in 1866 to the Ameri can expe dition of 1871 t o Korea, and Ame rica tried to open Korea independently but ended up wi th failure. The following stage is from the end of expedition t o the success of conc luding the treaty. America sought he lp from Japan and China, and concluded the treaty with the help of China eventually. In the pr ocess, the situation in the northeast ern Asi a had an i mpor tant infl uence on the signing of the t reaty. That we analyse the foreign policy of these countries about Korea and the backgr ound of the US-Korea trea ty is helpful for us to understand the ine vitability that Kore a was opened to west ern countries and the influe nce which the case made in the region.
