| Canal in the southwest Shandong province is the centre of the beijing-hangzhou grand canal, it is also important for ancient China to transport grain and trade between countries. From sui to Ming dynasty, this part of canal had been significantly enhanced in load-carrying capacity and the use fixed number of year after dredging by Chinese government,as a result, the relevant towns in southwest shandong also took the canal as main transport way. In order to supply food for capital and regions around there and to promote the development of the north-south trade, the qing government had repeatedly to mobilize a large number of manpower and financial resources to large-scale renovation and dredging of the canal, which had made great achievements.The towns along the canal is famous consequently.While the economic, cultural and natural conditions were declining since the middle of the 19 th century, the governance ability of Qing dynasty also became soft. Without government support,grain transportation between north and south quickly became silted up. At that time, the new transportation system took the chance to promote widely throughout the country. The canal as main transportation was replaced by new transportation such as train and ship which showed great advantage.Gradually the canal withdrew from the historical stage. New social problems has blurted out along the towns during the whole process,including ancient society problems such as grain transportation, secret association, population flows, modern social problems such as child labor, refugees refugees and new issues such as marriage customs reform. These social problems seemed different, but all of them formed in a particular history period and environment,they reflected social status meanwhile.Transportation in southwest region has changed since modern times, regional modernization level has also been improved. However,there are some social problems.
