Rodion Konstantinovich Shchedrin, a Russian composer, whose compositions are abundant in his enthusiasm in folk music of Russia, classic music, poetry and literature. In which there are a lot of fresh idea and unexpected creativity as well. Carmen Suite, one of Shchedrin’s compositions, which is written for an one-act ballet according to the music of opera Carmen composed by Georges Bizet.As a composition written for ballet by modern composer, there must have many new characteristics in Carmen Suite compared with Bizet’s opera. This thesis focuses on analyzing and summarizing the new features of Carmen Suite from the angle of orchestration technique, so that we can figure out how Shchedrin could recompose the classic music to fit the genre of ballet and interpret the connotation of music better.The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction of Shchedrin’s biography works and related information about Carmen Suite. In the second chapter, the author analyzes the structure of the work briefly as well as the characteristics of the setup of the band. Chapter three and chapter four summarize the characteristics of orchestration technique on percussion and string respectively. Chapter five makes up a solid conclusion of the whole orchestration technique’s features. Finally, the author concludes the reason for the characteristics in orchestration technique, combing with the trait of Spanish music. The author hopes can get some inspiration about how to recompose the classic music to adapt the contemporary genre in need, make some beneficial exploration for future practice of composing, and improve orchestration technique of the author through this research.
