| Thematic Teaching Model (also known as Thematic Based Approach), which is the most well-known teaching model on the base of constructivism, were first applied in North America and has been using in classes of ESL (English as a Second Language) for decades of years. Nowadays, this model is still popular and applied in teaching and learning second languages in European countries and some Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea, etc. Under the instruction of this model, themes and language learning are strongly linked, which is supposed to help learners to use and eventually master the target language. Supporters believe that this model can activate the class atmosphere, stimulate learners’ desire and acquire language skills together with language points. Through all these, class teaching will be more efficient. In recently years. Thematic Teaching Model has been introduced into China and gaining more and more attention from linguistics researchers and language teaching experts, especially in TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). By applying this model, some positive results have been achieved in teaching practice.In the standard of SLA, oral competence is usually considered as the most direct reflection of one’s comprehensive language competence, which makes the importance of speaking skill self-evident. In this thesis, the author tries to apply Thematic Teaching Model in oral Chinese classes, and makes a contrast teaching experiment between two classes (One applies Thematic Teaching Model, while the other applies traditional one.). By using surveys and doing oral exams, it proves that Thematic Teaching Model is more effective than traditional model in activating class atmosphere, organizing class teaching and improving learners’ oral skill. The former is worth to be popularized.This thesis includes five parts:three chapters, prolegomenon and conclusion.The prolegomenon part mainly introduces the reasons of choosing this topic, the goals and methods of the research, and the related overview in this research.The first chapter is engaged in stating the definition and the theoretical basement of Thematic Teaching Model, and the compatibility of applying it in TCSOL. Besides, this chapter also elaborates some important points while applying in practice, such as how to deal with the relation between themes and topics. how to select themes and the thematization of language elements, etc.The second chapter mainly introduces a contrast teaching experiment between two classes, and proves the efficiency of Thematic Teaching Model.The third chapter discusses the design of class teaching under Thematic Teaching Model and gives a sample plan as a reference.The conclusion part makes a brief summary of the points of view in this thesis and some other parts which need further research. |
