As a social phenomenon argued generally in current Chinese society, the “interpersonal apatheia phenomenon” has been existed for a long time. The Americans have begun to reflect on and discuss the “Kitty Genovese” incident from the perspective of interpersonal apatheia since 1964, but never get a convincing result. Afterwards, many psychologists and socialist turn to investigate the apatheia issue with scientific methods and they hold that apatheia is a psychological phenomenon which should be explored through psychological mechanisms lying behind. In China, the “Death of Wang Yue” in 2011 brings the argument about interpersonal apatheia to a climax. As a result, the incident has been concerned and discussed by the public since it was reported. Meanwhile, a variety of reasons to this phenomenon are put forward from different aspects. The results from general research suggest that the inner conscience and traditional moral ideas do not disappear, so what prevents people from rescue behavior and leads them to apatheia?Adopting a variety of methods such as documentary analysis, situation questionnaire survey, experimental design and so forth, the study investigates the interpersonal apatheia in 1122 college students selected from five universities in Kunming, Yunnan Province. The specific content consists of the current situation of interpersonal apatheia in college students and the influence made by rescue consequence and recipients attitude on the interpersonal apatheia. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:1. Trust plays a pivotal role in interpersonal apatheia. Compared with high trusters, low trusters are more inclined to leave in rescue situations.2. The interpersonal apatheia is affected by many factors such as gender, religion, domestic economics, non-single child and public and volunteer activities.3. Rescue consequence makes an effect on the interpersonal apatheia. The rescuer who suffered property damage would prefer to show interpersonal apatheia.4. Recipients’ attitude affects interpersonal apatheia of the rescuers. The interpersonal apatheia degree of the rescuers is low when recipients show a positive attitude or otherwise eager to help others.5. Both the rescue consequences and recipients attitude affect interpersonal apatheia.
