Piano etude is a creation theme with very practical value. With prevalence of public concerts, many composers and pianists became actively engaged in the development of piano practice showpieces, pursuing piano playing skills in hopes to thrive in concert. Piano etude has developed from the initial simple finger exercises into musical works of both skill and art. Hereby, Concert Etudes was born, gradually evolved into a virtuosic form of art to be played at concert that shows musicality.Sergei Vassilievitch Rachmaninoff is praised for the last composer, pianist and conductor adhering to the 19 th century Russian romanticism tradition. He created lots of piano works in his whole life, including two sets of vivid and far-reaching etudes. Based on “Etudes-tableaux Op.39 No.5”of Rachmaninoff, with the method of literature research, comparative analysis, example analysis and any other research methods, this article first analyses the inheritance and innovation of his works, then, studies its music score, playing skills and the ideological implication of the piece. Mainly, the article make a summary of the heroism, tragic and national character of his work to outline the style of Rachmaninoff”s etudes. The research of this article could provide some valuable reference for mastering and playing the works of Rachmaninoff.
