Shanghai is one of the earliest urbanized areas in China. Shanghai’s development is inseparable from rural migrant workers. According to the data in the ending of 2014, the permanent population in Shanghai has been currently up to 242.568 million. Among the data, the population of rural migrant workers and their family members has been 9.9642 million. Many rural migrant workers immigrant to Shanghai with their all family member. Furthermore, they decided to live in Shanghai forever. A large number of the children of migrant workers follow their parents into Shanghai and study in the public schools in Shanghai. They have become new Shanghainese. Because their parents haven’t got high education and they have a bad living surroundings and worse learning environment, it causes that the children have poor learning basis and study habits. Especially their English level is much poorer than the other subjects. This problem has been the hot issue in the society. As an English teacher of the primary school, I think it is very important to cultivate the autonomous English learning ability of these children in which it will change the serious lag as soon as possible.《English curriculum reform in Shanghai》demands:our English teacher should transform the English learning style and improve the interest of English learning of the students, in which in order to lay the foundations of lifelong learning. Improving student’s autonomous English learning ability must be the inexorable trend of《English curriculum reform in Shanghai》,moreover, so does the English teaching reform and development! It is also the vital factor on learning English of the children. Due to the lack of home education and ignoring the children’s studying, the children of migrant workers was bad at learning English. So It will be a noticeable problem that how to cultivate the autonomous English learning ability; how to reduce the gap of English learning from the rural migrant children and local students, how to help the rural migrant children improve their English score and learning ability as to accord with the demand of《English curriculum reform in Shanghai》.In this thesis, the author first expounded the concept of autonomous English learning ability and review of domestic and foreign research literature. In addition, the author design a survey to find the difference from the local students and rural migrant children on English current learning situation. Moreover, by communication with other English teacher and discussion on the migrant children in their English learning difficulties. To further understand the difficulties of migrant children in English learning, and to analyze the causes of migrant children English learning difficulties. Based on the comparison, and the requirements of the Shanghai primary school English curriculum standards, found the existing problems and the reality gap, and then seek strategies to cultivate and improve the children of migrant workers in English learning, and hope to help migrant children in applying English learning strategies and methods. The specific strategies proposed in this paper are divided into: first, to cultivate the children of migrant workers, to stimulate learning interest; two, to help migrant children to change and develop a good English learning habits; three, to help migrant children gradually learn to manage their own learning time; four, to build a foreign migrant children to carry out English autonomous learning strategy. Finally, as a primary school English teacher, we should be in the classroom teaching, combined with the learning situation of migrant children, and constantly explore the teaching methods, in the classroom to explore the effective strategies for the cultivation of migrant children in English Autonomous learning.
