Research On Layout Design Of "Compendium Of Materia Medica"

In this paper, author used documentary method,historical reduction method, method of comparative analysis, from 3 dimensions to measure and analyze the object--Weiguzhai edition Compendium of Materia Medica, Zhang’s in Hefei. From the perspective of layout design, author analyzed the distinctive framework of Ben cao gang mu of information systematics. From the perspective of visual communication design, author dissertated the ingenious use of notes and commentaries to contain complicated schema structure under the tidy layout, and the flexible graphic combination guided by the modularized design concept. At the last, binding the production technology and aesthetic orientation of ancient time, author analyzed the reason for the formation of the sense of order. Author progressively analized these 3 perspectives, and explored the frugal design conception of ancient books based on the point of view of modern mass information intergrated design.Based on research, author concluded:As a mass information integrated design on complex use of schema structure, and oriental minimalism expressed in tidy layout among complicated schema structure and properly detailed graphic information order, Hefei edition<Ben Cao Gang Mu> has its unique design philosophy. Instead of just getting satisfied by exterior symbols and forms, we should focus more on the ancients’ core of structure when studying design from the tradition. Integrating exterior and interior, by learning and practicing, we can truely gain new knowledge by reviewing old.
