This thesis concerns the development of modern and contemporary dance in Shanghai, tracing its trajectory since the introduction of modern dance into China in the early 20 th century through to the present, investigating its historical contexts and aesthetic values. Primarily, the thesis provides a thorough review of the contributions made by the older generation of modern dance artists in Shanghai. In addition, the thesis discusses the vibrant development of Shanghai’s creative dance scene today in light of the city’s urban culture, offering a consideration of its future prospects.First of all, drawing from relevant dance historical materials, the thesis conducts detailed interpretation and analysis of the works and activities of 20 th century modern dance artists in Shanghai, such as Wu Xiaobang, Hu Jialu, Jin Xin, and other outstanding choreographers. The unique expression of modern dance is analyzed from cultural, social, and aesthetic angles. Secondly, informed by the aesthetic values thus inherited from history, the thesis considers the direction of contemporary dance in Shanghai today. Situating contemporary dance in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, the thesis investigates its creative trend in the 21 st century, which has formed unique characteristics only found in Shanghai.
