Bilateral economic relationships are the foundation of a sustainable politicalrelationship. During the past twenty years, Sino-Russian economic and trade relationshave also witnessed profound developments. However, with the importance graduallyattached to bilateral and multilateral diplomacy at the end of the20thcentury,Sino-Russian relationships also met a roadblock due to the intricate problems in itsdevelopment. With the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in2001, Sino-Russian trade volume has already surpassed$10b in this year. With thesetwo pillars of economic development and security, the SCO is not only an importantfactor in the stability of central Asia, but also a significant area in which China candevelop its multilateral and economic diplomacy. The development of the SCO andthe Sino-Russian economic and trade relations are mutually reinforcing processes.This article tries to explore the role SCO plays in Sino-Russian economic and traderelations, the function it has as an international organization is to solve problems inSino-Russian economic and trade relations. This article concludes with policy adviceto develop Sino-Russian trade and economic relations through the SCO, and the vitalrole the SCO has in improving Sino-Russian economic and trade cooperation, thefostering of the “Silk Route Economic Belt” put forward by China, and theimplementation of China’s neighboring countries’ policy and regional economicdevelopment.
