Backgroud: Cancer is becoming first killer of human life and health, and one of the world's largest public health problems in the new century; about 60% to 70% cancer patients need to receive radiotherapy in the cancer hospitals, so radiotherapy is an important treatment measure for cancers. With the development of cancer radiation therapy technology, radiobiology and radiation physics, a lot of data on radiation oncology has been accumulated. But because many of these data resources are in a decentralized state, and lack of effective means of sharing data, it is difficult to take full advantage. By current database and network technology, we can effectively organize, manage and share these data resources to combat cancer.Purpose: To study the feasibility of establishing radiation oncology database for promoting the radiation oncology data resources sharing; To establish the core metadata database about Cancer Data-sharing System for promoting the sharing and management of data in China Cancer Database.Materials and Methods: The data sources of radiation oncology database are radiation oncology monographs and websites of authoritative medical organizations. including Radiation Oncology, AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, National Cancer Insitute, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, Chinese Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology, and so on. Core metadata of China Cancer Database was generated by MetaSmart2.0, which is a metadata cataloguing tool. MySQL database management system is used as database server. Dynamic website is built by JSP/Servlet technology. JDBC API technology is used to establish the connection with MySQL database, and send SQL statement, and access any tabular data sources, and process the results.Results: The three tiers network architecture based on the Browser/Server (B/S) model has been designed for radiation oncology database and core metadata database. Data resources about radiation oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics and TNM Staging of cancer can be queried and managed in radiation oncology database, and the database URL is http: //cancernet.cicams.ac.cn/radiation; Core metadata of China Cancer Database can be queried and managed in core metadata database of Cancer Data-sharing System, and the database URL is http://canceretn.cicams.ac.cn/meta.Conclusion: Radiation oncology database and core metadata database of Cancer Data-sharing System have been established, and have achieved all designed functions, and at present are being tested on the Internet.
