Disaster tolerance technology is one of the important technologies that ensure high availability of computer systems. In theory, disaster tolerance technology includes heartbeat detection technology and many other technical means, such as two module backup, computer cluster, storage area network, etc. In computer systems, when human operation failure occurs, system error occurs, or even physical attack, lack of power, flood and other disaster occur, disaster tolerance technology can prevent system from losing data, meanwhile, provide high availability service. As part of disaster tolerance, heartbeat technology is used to detect system failures and do appropriate response, the performance and accuracy of heartbeat have great effect on service of disaster tolerance, so heartbeat has become a necessary part of disaster tolerance technology.My article first describes the basis of disaster tolerance technology, including the concept, classification, technique level, performance parameter and the development within the country and abroad. Then we turn to a production system which demands high availability service; design a disaster tolerance system for it. We use two-module technique, high availability clusters in LAN for disaster tolerance, and use disaster tolerance center technique in WAN. We describe the software and hardware architecture of the disaster tolerance system in detail, divide the whole system into subsystems, discuss the subsystem function and relationship between the subsystems, then design and analyze the disaster tolerance control center subsystem and state detection subsystem. Afterwards we research heartbeat detection, talking about the basic principle, performance parameter and how to choose heartbeat protocols under different situations. In our project, heartbeat detection is a vital part, we design and implement the LAN heartbeat and WAN heartbeat, analyze the accelerate heartbeat protocols we select, improve it with two module technique and election algorithm, discuss which method is better for our project requirement, do experiment for heartbeat detection then get the data for validating our choice.
