Research On Topic-Map Based Knowledge Organization Systems Of Subject Information Gateway

With the advancement of digital information technology and World Wide Web in recently years,how to organize,integrate relations and concepts that are mebedded in multiple and heterogeneous digital information is more important.Knowledge organization becomes the hot topic nowadays.Now most of subject information gateways use traditional organization methods to organize information.But traditional organization methods couldn't exhibit the underlying relationships between information contents.Topic Map can be used to solve this problem.Topic Map marries the best of traditional methods and can be used to organize information by topics and their associations.This paper analyses knowledge organization methods of subject information gateways, then introduces Topic Map and the advantages of subject information gateways based on Topic Map.This paper presents a framework of subject information gateways based on Topic Map,and introduces the realization of the XTM-based subject information gateway.This thesis includes four parts.The first part gives a gentle introduction to traditional knowledge organization methods and analyses the limitations.The second part goes further to explain the feasibilities of subject information gateways based on Topic-Map.The third part presents a system framework of subject information gateways based on Topic Map,and introduces the idea of XTM-based subject information gateways.The fourth part constructs an XTM ontology taking ship engineering field in CALIS navigation of net resources of key disciplines as example,and realizes the Topic-Map based subject information gateway.
