| This research selects The South Weekend, The Yangtze Evening, Chinese Youth, and People's Daily as target media. Nine hundred and twenty-one news reports about college students from 2004 to 2006 in those four papers are obtained on the basis of some set rules. According to these reports, we conduct certain content analysis and structure analysis in order to investigate the form and content features of the coverage about college students reported by those main domestic media, and examine how the media gather those news about college students and re-display the image of modern college students. According to this research, we discovered that in recent years, domestic media are being highly enthusiastic over gathering the news about college students. All these are confirmed by the amount, length, and printing space of the relevant reports. In the meantime, those main domestic media haven't displayed the so-called tendency---"demonizition" or "stigmatization"---to college students as other people vilified. In the contrast, in some aspects, such as the nature or the topics of the reports, gender distribution or the sources of the information, the media have employed a comparative positive attitude. However, there do exist some obvious shortcomings in the reports about college students from the media. For example, in the distribution of various literary forms, reviews haven't occupied their fair share. As for the different areas and distribution of different levels of education concerned in our reports, more or less, there exists certain "bias". Especially, such bias appears in the neglect of the whole media in reporting the rapid development of the colleges run by our local people in recent years. According to all those analyses, this research draws a conclusion that reports about college students in our domestic papers are comparative objective and comprehensive. This also manifests the fair professional qualities and journalistic spirits of the main domestic media in China. |
