Nowadays, in order to survive from the market competition, which is more and more fierce, modern manufacturing enterprises should response to the needs of customers at a high speed, especially in complex large-scale projects, we need the Computer Supported Cooperative Work, so the tradition markup system which don't support the cooperative use will not meet the designers'needs, accordingly we must integrate the Computer Supported Cooperative Work technique with the markup system, and it will be an important tool for designers. This dissertation introduces some research results first, and then analyzes the shortcomings of existing systems. After that, we present that we can use the technology of lightweight models in the cooperative browsing and markup system to solve the problem. File sizes are reduced greatly by data compression, which facilitates release and communication over Internet. Through the interface which can transform some popular CAD software file formats to the lightweight model format, the problem of cooperation between different CAD systems can be solved very well and the lightweight model format can also make sure that the model is not used for other purpose such as reverse engineering. This dissertation also describes development of the system in details, which is based on the HOOPS component technology, and gives the realization methods for the cooperative browsing and markup function and operating, together with the drawing process of the markup elements. The dissertation ends with a discussion on the future work as well as a summary of the whole dissertation content.
