Elytra’s forewing is a biological material with special structure and function, which in possess ofproperties of light weight and high strength and so on. This material is one of the bionic objects toresearch light weight, high strength and multi-functional structural material.Based on the character of the microstructure of the beetle’s elytra, three kinds of bio-inspiredlightweight structures were designed and made of the raw material of304stainless steel sheet, aramidpaper and epoxy-based carbon fiber with the method of metal forming, molding and co-curingmolding.The thermal bath experiments of the three structures were conducted. At the same time, the threestructures were analyzed with FEM. Comparing the experimental results with the FEM analysis, theresults proved both the accuracy and reliability of FEM. Based on this, the thermal properties at hightemperature of300℃of three structures were calculated and analyzed with FEM. According to theresults and the softening decomposition temperature of two composites, the bionic structures wereimproved with designing.The quasi-static compression experiments of the three samples were carried out and thecompression performance were calculated with ANSYS to verify the reliability and accuracy of FEM.Based on this, the structures’ mechanical properties at high temperature were further analyzed withFEM, which was compared with the mechanical properties at room temperature. The results indicatedthat the high temperature had an obvious effect on the compression performance. Both the roomtemperature and the high temperature, the double metal structure’s compression ultimate strength isthe highest of the three structures. But the metal/carbon fiber’s specific strength is the highest of thethree structures.By studying the thermal and mechanical properties of bionic lightweight structure in this paper,the new design ideas and innovative ideas will be provided for studying the multi-functionallightweight structural materials.
