Flow around blunt bodies is one of the most important topics in fluid mechanics, whichis the most common physical phenomena and the relevant question is applied widely inengineering practice. The mathematical model of Navier-Stokes equation in abstract flowaround a blunt body is very complex. To solve this problem, computational fluid dynamicssoftware is an effective method.In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT is used to simulatecylindrical and square columns in a Newtonian fluid and power-law fluid flow. Firstly,GAMBIT software, which is the pre-processor of FLUENT, is utilized to establish the modelsof cylinder and square columns. Secondly, mesh of the flow field is generated. Finally, thephysical model is imported to FLUENT for numerical calculation. SIMPLE algorithm ischosen as solver and finite volume method is applied to discretize the governing equations,such as Navier-Stokes equation.This paper calculates and simulates the flow around circular and square cylinder underthe conditions of Newton fluid and power-law fluid. The vorticity contour, velocity vector,velocity cloud of the flow field are obtained. By the results of the numerical simulation, theshedding and the movement of the trailing vortex and the changes of the lift and dragcoefficient values are analyzed. Compared with the experimental results, the analysis givesmore accurate results and verifies the reliability of the numerical solution of the problem.
