Loess is of collapsibility and comparatively low mechanical strength. The loess areas are often subject to geological hazard such as severe soil erosion and landslide. And carry out compaction loess slope research, analysis of the occurrence of the geological environment, engineering geological condition, hydrogeological condition, the filling process, the engineering properties of loess compaction, embankment height, stability and control scheme optimization, can enrich the content of the loess landslide research and methods, enrich the theory of geotechnical engineering, conforms to the requirements of engineering geology, has important theoretical significance and practical significance.Taking example of the landslide of the compactible loess at Guanshan Pumping Station and reviewing the stability analysis methodology and control measures against landslides, this paper analyzes the causes and inducing factors of the loess landslide, studies its stability and presents effective engineering control measures. In doing so, consideration is given to the geological and engineering conditions and the development characteristics of the landslides of the compactible loess of pumping stations in Lanzhou. The paper mainly deals with the following tasks:1. To identify the geological conditions of the loess landslide at Guanshan Pumping Station. This involves the investigation of the site’s hydro-meteorological, geomorphic and topographic conditions, the lithological character of the strata, the geological structures, the engineering and geological features of the rock and soil mass, the hydrogeological environment and human engineering activities at the site.2. To analyze the physical and mechanical property of the slip soil and study the failure mechanism of the landslide based on the engineering and geological mapping. The activities to this end include field drilling, laboratory tests and investigation of the form and the scale, the boundary, surface and internal character of the landslide and the features of the deformation as well as the causes of the landslide.3. To carry out the computational analysis of the landslide stability with limit equilibrium method and to evaluate the stability of the landslide.4. To present the optimized control plan of landslide. This plans suggests combination of surface drainage and slide-resistant piles and compaction pile engineering. This landslide control project has been completed in 2012. The monitoring data reveal that the control measures have attained good results and hence can be used for reference to similar projects.
