With the shortage of energy resources, oil shale emerges as an alternative energy resource for its three key virtues. Under the research of geochemistry on oil shale, the sedimentary environment can be determined, and oil shale quality can be described.Southern Ordos Basin had a favorable environment to forme the oil shale. By the research work, we mainly achieved the following understanding:(1) By conducting the basin depositional environment, sedimentary facies, petrographic analysis of ancient geography, ancient structures, etc., we concluded that the oil shale in study area formed in the deep lake- semi-deep lake environment.(2) Studies have shown that Yanchang formation had 2 layers of oil shale, which numbered KC1 and KC2 from top to bottom. And KC1 also can be divided into KC1-1, KC1-2, KC1-3,and KC1-3 can be available. The KC1-3 oil shale mianly distributed in Shui bei gou of Binxin-Zhanghong of Xunyi、Madizui of Xunyi and An zi wa of Tongchuan-Dawan three mine fields. The thickness of the oil shale was from 4.7-33.87 m, with the average of 14.15 m, and oil content 3.5-12.8%, with an arerage of 5.98%,which was high-grade oil shale.(3) The oil shale layers and other rocks had different physical characteristics, logging characterized the high of apparent resistivity, high strength of natural gamma, high of acoustic time, small of density and SP, which had “three high and two low” characteristics.(4) Study showed that the KC1-3 oil shale was high- grade of oil shale, which was low volatile, middle-high sulfur, high fluoride, low chloride, four levels of arsenic, middle-low calorific value, poor of sintering and coking property, siliceous ash, low softening temperature,etc.(5) Circling the oil shale favourable areas for research district, which about 962km2, with an average thickness of 14.15 m, oil content 5.98%, which resource was 28 billion tons, converting into shale oli was 1.6billion tons.
