Debris flow is a geological phenomena mainly occurring in the mountain areas, featured with wide distribution, a large amount, high incidence, sudden outbreak, short duration and strong disaster causing ability. In the southwest China, the terrain conditions are complex, the earth surface is broken, and there are many mountains, and concentrated rainfall for being affected by the Indian Ocean monsoon, which make it be a high incidence area of mudslides. To deal with the huge losses caused by mudslides, we should strengthen studies on its breeding conditions and development characteristics, and make active management with emphasis on comprehensive use of multiple control measures, on the basis of extensive investigations, and strengthen its monitoring and ultimately achieve the purpose of disaster prevention and mitigation.Eri-ditch is an old debris flow gully. The first debris flow occurred in 1984, then it has took place in different sizes of flash floods or mudslides after the rainy season every year, posing a serious threat to life and property safety of the residents near the gully. This paper, on the basis of detailed exploration data, by collecting, checking domestic and foreign literature on mudslides, makes analysis on the Eri-ditch debris flow’s formation conditions, development characteristics and trend, to forecast its flushing scale, frequency of occurrence and risk range and put forward reasonable and feasible engineering control project. When analyzing the movement characteristics and hazard forming model of Eri-ditch debris flow, this paper considers comprehensively the affect of "5.12 Wenchuan earthquake" on the Eri-ditch material source conditions and topography changes, based on the survey data on site. For the exact geological environment and atmospheric condition of Eri-ditch, this paper has made conclusions more consistent with the reality, which will provide forceful theory support for the following control project. For all the protection targets gathering on the entry to the gully, the paper determines the harnessing idea of the "blocking the drainage as the key, supplemented by fixing the sources". At the downstream of material source zone, three blocking dams shall be set up to stabilize the upstream material source and cut the peak mudslides flow. For the ditch and road in the protection target gathering area being not the same in width, and complex terrain and unstable flow path, the setting of diversion bank can effectively guide the mudslides into Xianshui river, thus adequately protecting the resident settlements at downstream.
