With the development of industrialization, resource scarcity and environmentalpollution problems have gradually threatened human survival and development. Thenew industrial pattern represented by industrial symbiosis has been developed. Thestudy of industrial symbiosis theory is also flourishing.However, as research continues, it is increasingly recognized that industrialsymbiosis theory has complex, systemic and uncertain characteristics. The study ofindustrial symbiosis system operation pattern is limited to qualitative division and theresearch about quantitive division is less. In some extent, all of these affect thedevelopment of study in this field. The study shows that characteristics of complexnetworks are expressed in a lot of industrial symbiosis networks which can be analysedwith complex networks theory. The community structure is an important property ofcomplex networks. With the community structure theory, complex networks can berealized quantitive division. So, in this paper, based on the community structure theory,operation mode in industrial symbiosis system is realized quantitive division and someresearches have been carried out in industrial symbiosis networks.To start with, according to the characteristics of industrial symbiosis networks, thetraditional spectrum split algorithm and condensation algorithm have been improved.With using this two kinds of typical community discovery algorithms, Kalundborgindustrial symbiosis networks in the year1985and2000can be divided intocommunities and compared with its actual development situation of different growthstages. The results show that the community division of Kalundborg industrialsymbiosis networks with the spectrum split algorithm improved is closer to its actualdevelopment. The spectrum split algorithm improved is more suitable for thecommunity division of industrial symbiosis networks and lay the foundation for thefurther research.Next, considering the complex industrial symbiosis networks are difficult torealize quantitative division. A structure division method of complex industrialsymbiosis networks is proposed based on the algorithm of community division. According to the community structure of the complex industrial symbiosis networks, amethod is presented to evaluate the results of the industrial symbiosis networksdivision based on Girvan-Newman modularity and the concepts of linking density andcohesion of communities. This method is not restricted by the resolution of thecomplex symbiosis networks, it is still applied when the size of network community isdifferent. Jinjie eco-industrial system as the example is divided into communities withthe Capocci spectral bisection method, the result of the division is evaluated with usingthe evaluation method proposed. The results show that the community structurequantitative division of the complex industrial symbiosis networks is feasible with themethod of community division based on complex networks theory.Finally, based on the theory of community structure, we also put forward anevaluation method of the integration level to industrial symbiosis networks. Thismethod is verified by analysing the integration level of Kalundborg industrialsymbiosiss networks with different growth stages and other actual cases of industrialsymbiosis. This method proposed provides a new way of quantitative evaluation andjudgment to the integration degree in industrial symbiosis networks.
