High quality emerald (beryl) were found in the south area of Xinjiang recently, which have attracted attention. So, the paper, base on pioneers’ achievement, using modern testing methods, such as EPMA、 XRD、IR、LRM, to analyze and research characterize of the emerald.The following conclusion were drawn:(1)Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) shows, With increasing Cr/Fe, the south area of Xinjiang emerald color deepens, and it belong to rich in Cr and Fe, poor of alkali, and contain of Fe in Xinjiang emerald is higher than Colombia’s. Maybe Fe2+is instead of Al3+in emerald from the south area of Xinjiang.The result of ICP-MS, water content of emerald from the south area of Xinjiang is1.72%.which have the same result with IR.(2)X-ray diffractometer (XRD) shows Xinjiang emerald samples cell parameters are ao=9.2417nm, c0=9.1954nm, c/a=0.9949; so there are a amount of isomorphous substitution of [AlO6]"octahedral" in emerald from the south of Xinjiang.(3)The emerald samples analysis test from the south area of Xinjiang are studied by using infrared spectra(IR), The results show that type-Ⅰ H2O and type-Ⅱ H2O both exist, and type-ⅡH2o predominate. the content of CO2in the south area of Xinjiang emerald is higher.(4)The LRM shifts prove again there are CO2in the south of Xinjiang emerald.This paper’s research is a good reference for Mineralogy and Gemmology of emerald from the south area of Xinjiang And to evaluate the emerald quality, there are great significance to further play the emerald economic value.
