Tornado is a kind of extreme weather, it has short duration, large velocity, strong destruction and difficult to predict, etc. Tornado can occur in the world except Antarctica, North America and Europe is the area of frequent occurrence of a tornado. The global annual economic loss and casualties caused by tornado is very huge. Researchers did a lot of research by numerical simulation, experiment and field measurements, but there is no unanimous conclusion of formation mechanism, structure and damage mode. In recent years, researchers found that the value of tornado’s application in cyclone separator and aero engine when they study on it. There are also some researchers proposed the idea of electricity generation by using tornado. Therefore, whether preventing disasters or generating value, tornado need to be study on systematically and comprehensively. This has important implications for social economic development and the protection of the human environment.In this paper, numerical simulation was used to research the tornado’s internal structure and velocity distribution. We analyzed the impact of various factors on the tornado wind field and designed a tornado generator. The main contents are as follows:We established the physical model of numerical simulation by simplifying the existed tornado generators including inflow zone, convection zone and outflow zone of the three components. Numerical simulation used the commercial software FLUENT. We compared the numerical simulation results with field measurement results, verified the accuracy of the numerical simulation method.Studied the internal structure and flow field characteristics of the tornado wind field, discovered the critical swirl ratio of different structure transformed, obtained the velocity distribution of wind field and the changing rule of the core radius. Tornado is mobile and often will go through the town in reality, so we analyzed the influence of translation and surface roughness on tornado wind field. In this numerical simulation, the inlet velocity and model dimension are variable, so we study their impact on the tornado wind field.According to the results of numerical simulation, we proposed and designed a new tornado generator. By comparing the experimental data and the results of numerical simulation, verified the device can generate tornado-like wind field.CFD method is used in this paper, we provide a new tornado generator for tornado experiment, and also we laid the foundation for tornado in application.
