With the rapid development of indoor location services, indoor map as the information carrier of indoor location services has began to receive more attention. In recent years, researches on indoor map are increasing gradually, but which tends to focus on the realization of the map system. The following are three characteristics that can be concluded:Firstly, the importance was attached on the product development, however, the research on the basic theory of indoor maps becomes less; Secondly, more attention was paid to the studying of the realization of navigation, positioning and other functions, but the method for the designing and expression of map itself is insufficient; Thirdly, the processes of map designing and manufacturing have been more randomness for lacking of relevant specification and guidance, so different map service providers provide various styles of indoor maps, in other words, it has not been yet formed a unified industry standard. As Indoor map is the basis of indoor location services, map design and expression affect the transmission efficiency of map information. Therefore, this paper conducted a research focused on the design and expression method of indoor map for the mobile terminal from the perspective of cognitive cartography, according to the cognitive characteristics of the indoor space, combined with the mobile terminal equipment, using the basic theory and methods of map design, in order to validate the effectiveness of the design and expression method proposed here, an indoor map application prototype system based on Android platform was successfully developed and experiments were conducted rigorously. The main work of this paper as follows:(1) Made an overview on the state-of-the-art of indoor map development, then reviewed the current situation of the design and expression of indoor map. According to the four levels of indoor map studying, the research topic and purpose was located in this paper, the main research ideas and framework were also proposed based on the perspective of cartography.(2) Summarized the basic theory and method of indoor map design, and summarized specific steps and principles of indoor map design. Cognitive characteristics of indoor space are analyzed, and clarified how they influence on indoor map design; the basic theory of map design has been summarized, such as the visual perception theory, the theory of using map color and so on, the mobile terminal equipment conditions and the using environment were analyzed, then the influence on the selection of features, symbolization and expression of mobile map has been discussed.(3) Researched on the selection and classification method of indoor map elements. The general elements of interior space are summarized,and stated the necessity of the classification of the indoor map elements, combining with the cognitive characteristics of the indoor space, some main ideas about feature selection and classification are proposed; based on those principles, the indoor map features were divided into three types, framework features,key features(single floor and multi-floor) and the key features which users are interested in, the importance of elements was evaluated by the designed experiments, which would help to verify the rationality of the selection and classification methods.(4) According to the results of the classification of map elements, comprehensive application of color theory and symbol visual variables, referenced mobile map symbol design experience, two-dimensional abstract symbols and three-dimensional non-simulation symbol are designed for the selected elements; In addition, three kinds of indoor map application mode are proposed for the mobile terminal, which are single floor application mode, multi-floor conversion application mode, indoor and outdoor conversion application mode, and for each mode,the corresponding generalization and expression methods of mobile map elements were analyzed respectively.(5) Based on the Android platform, a prototype system for the indoor map application was developed successfully, relevant functions of three kinds of application modes were also achieved; the process of making the indoor two-dimensional and three-dimensional map were introduced by taking Zhongyuan Wanda Plaza located in zhengzhou as an example, it also presented the operation effect of the prototype system.
